Robin W. Thorburn ADHP (NC) MNRHP FNSHP UKCP (H)  has conducted over 11,000 Hypno-Psychotherapy sessions.

The purpose of this 5 day British Psychological Society CPD Approved, Exclusive Hypnotherapy certificate training course is to teach Psychologists, social workers and allied health professionals effective application and practice of hypnotherapy.

Utilising my 25 years in full-time clinical practice as a Hypno-psychotherapist, owner of Edinburgh’s longest established practice, having conducted over 11,000 sessions, a Fellow of The National Society of Hypnosis Psychotherapy, a full member of The National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists and a member of The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy Division and UKCP registered supervisor.

Robin works with the originator of cognitive therapy’s wife Dr Joffe Ellis

He presented Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy/Hypnotherapy to Edinburgh Napier University Psychological Society, the National Society of Hypnosis & Psychotherapy Conference in Leicester and to the British Psychological Society Conference in Brighton in May 2017.


Purpose is to enable the student to:

  • Understand the essence of hypnotherapy, i.e. what it is and what it is not, to be aware of the types of psychological problems it can treat and any possible contra-indications.
  • To encourage a realistic yet confident approach to its application, with the consultation and therapy sessions.





Introduction to Hypnotherapy, who and why it benefits people. Common misconceptions.  Contra-indications.  Preparing the consulting room for hypnotherapy.  Conducting a consultation.  How a hypnotic state is induced, use of words, semantic precision, voice tonality, inflections, pauses, pre-suppositions. Explanation of the physiological effects that occur within a hypnotic state. Signs to be aware of during the hypnotic state. Terminating the hypnotherapy session Demonstration Participants are encouraged to practice one to one under my supervision. Discussion and feedback, which will effectively be taking place throughout the day.

Summary and discussion


Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy with rational emotive imagery.  Further explanation on conducting a hypnotherapy session REI in practice as a pre-cursor to the hypnotherapy session.  Formulation of suggestions for the hypnotherapy session, use of metaphors. Discussion of a direct approach: Dr Albert Ellis. An indirect approach: Dr Milton Erickson. Effective combining of them. One to one practice.


Evaluation of what has been learned so far, more in depth discussion. Continued one to one practice Discussion of my case histories Demonstration of a consultation and first session
One to one demonstrations.


Condition-specific hypnotherapy e.g. Anxiety, smoking cessation, weight loss, confidence, phobias etc  How to target specific presenting problems with hypnotherapy Scripts Practice of the above.

This is an intensive British Psychological Society Accredited CPD, Hypnotherapy Training Certificate course from Exclusive Hypnotherapy, with option of joining The National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists.  

Successful completion allows graduates Associate 1 membership to The National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists. Associate 2 in the second year of membership.  Associate 3 in the third year and Full membership after 3 years plus.
