As the law stands at the moment anyone can set up in practice as a hypnotherapist without undergoing any formal training. In the United Kingdom there are over 100 hypnotherapy related organisations, many of which offer some kind of training. Of those only four have applied successfully to and been given accreditation by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The National College is the only institution of its kind externally accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent and Higher Education. Such accreditation has been acknowledged by the Secretary of State for Education as the only public guarantee of standards in independent institutions of further and higher education in the UK.
The National College has recently become a founder a member of the European Association for Hypno-Psychotherapy. The aims to unite national Hypno-Psychotherapy training institutes and national Hypno-Psychotherapy organisations into a common association for Europe.
As a graduate of the National College I have been awarded a fellowship. This is the highest grade and is awarded to those who have achieved the National College?s Advanced Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy and are thus eligible to be registered with the UKCP. This training is at masters degree level and takes a minimum of four years. I am a Member of the National Register of Hypnotherapists & Psychotherapists. The National Register is responsible for regulating its Practitioners to ensure a high standard of treatment at all times.
The UKCP’s purpose is to promote the art and science of psychotherapy for the public benefit; to promote research and education in psychotherapy and disseminate the results of any such research; and to promote (or assist in the promotion, preservation and protection of public health by encouraging) high standards of training and practice in psychotherapy and the wider provision of psychotherapy for the public benefit.
