I’ve been practising hypnotherapy in Edinburgh for the last 20 years. Find out more about my experiences and highlights from the last two decades.

The Start of my Hypnotherapy Career in Edinburgh

I first became interested in hypnotherapy in Edinburgh at the age of twenty-five as I thought it would be a quick and creative approach towards helping people struggling with bad habits, phobias and other psychological problems.

Constantly refining and enhancing my therapeutic style and techniques to help people has kept me interested in hypnosis, and I have successfully treated around 3000 people for fears and phobias. I have conducted about 8,000 therapy sessions in my career and have even hypnotised someone in a nightclub to help them stop smoking! That was many years ago now but I am glad to say it worked.

The Treatment

Over the past 21 years I have treated all sorts of patients including many famous people, with problems ranging from bad habits to stage fright! Unfortunately I can’t tell you who they were but the treatments were all successful. The most interesting problem a patient has come to me with, over the years, was psychosomatic voice loss. I am delighted I got the client speaking again, it was remarkable and I would say it was a great success in my career.

It would usually take me about three sessions to help patients with phobias and habits but I would certainly hope they would notice a difference after the first one. I have always found the hardest patients to treat are smokers who do not want to stop! They are a consistently hard group to treat as they do not want to willingly give up, that said I have had many, many success stories. It is a great feeling to treat someone for such a bad habit and know their life will be a lot healthier for it.

I regularly treat patients who are anxious about preparing for public speaking events (including lots of brides and grooms). I find confidence is the most common problem patients come to me for help with. My first ever patient was a school teacher with confidence issues, I was able to successfully help her, but I have seen countless patients like this since. Patients confuse what they think other people conditionally think about them rather than unconditionally accepting their self. I have noticed lack of confidence is currently on the increase, certainly for people in their thirties. This is something I am really trying to conquer at Exclusive Hypnotherapy, with the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapies including REBT.

I first became involved with REBT in 1992 when I wrote my dissertation on the methodologies of cognitive therapy with hypnotherapy. Simply put, REBT is enhanced common sense that has been repeatedly found to work for clients, long term.

During my career I have been fortunate enough to work with some remarkable people and in particular Dr. Albert Ellis, one of the greatest ever psychotherapists who pioneered Cognitive Therapy with Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), praised my work on innovative thinking and educational techniques. I am privileged to continue to work with Ellis’s wife, Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, and her work on their groundbreaking approach of REBT is important to my treatment at Exclusive Hypnotherapy.

As well as the phenomenal Dr. Albert Ellis, I also regard the work of the prolific Australian expert on the nervous system, Dr. Claire Weekes, as one of my biggest influences.

Besides Hypnotherapy

My job revolves around making sure my patients are relaxed, and keeping them relaxed. So after a busy day of treating patients I like to unwind by walking the dog and playing with my three year old daughter, and of course chatting with my wife! It might surprise some people but if I had to quit hypnotherapy tomorrow I would open an animal sanctuary and care for cats, dogs and anything else that needed my help.

I have had a fantastic career in hypnotherapy so far with numerous awards, accolades, many published articles, including a British Psychological Society Accredited Seminar on REBT and Hypnotherapy and a Fellowship of The National Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy.  I am also proud to say that Exclusive Hypnotherapy is the longest full-time Hypno-psychotherapy practice in Edinburgh.  I look forward to another 20 years of helping people with phobias, habits and  various disorders and giving them the treatment they require to live a completely fulfilled life.
