Anger Management Hypnotherapy Edinburgh: the basics

Anger Management Hypnotherapy offers a unique approach to anger management by working directly with the subconscious mind, where many of our emotional responses originate. Unlike Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on conscious thought patterns, hypnotherapy aims to reprogram ingrained responses and create new, healthier ways of reacting to anger triggers.

Anger Management Hypnotherapy Therapy Sessions

  1. Initial Consultation and Assessment:
A qualified hypnotherapist will begin with a thorough consultation to understand your history with your condition, its triggers, and its impact on your life. This includes exploring past experiences, current stressors, and your overall emotional well-being.
This assessment helps the therapist tailor a personalized treatment plan specifically designed to address your individual needs and challenges.
  2. Relaxation and Induction:
Hypnotherapy sessions typically begin with relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or guided imagery, to help you enter a state of deep relaxation and focus.
The therapist then guides you into a hypnotic trance, which is not a state of sleep but rather a heightened state of suggestibility and focus. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process.
  3. Suggestive Techniques:
Once in a hypnotic state, the therapist uses various suggestive techniques to address the root causes of your condition. This might involve:
Identifying and reframing negative thought patterns: The therapist helps you identify the automatic negative thoughts and beliefs that contribute to your condition and replace them with more positive and rational ones.
Developing coping mechanisms: Hypnotherapy can help you develop effective coping mechanisms to manage triggers and reduce impulsive reactions. This could involve visualization techniques, self-soothing strategies, or affirmations.
Accessing and processing past trauma: If past trauma or negative experiences contribute to your condition, hypnotherapy can help you access and process these memories in a safe and supportive environment.
Strengthening self-esteem and self-compassion: Hypnotherapy can help improve self-esteem and self-compassion, which are crucial for managing your condition effectively. This involves positive affirmations and visualizations to enhance self-worth.
  4. Post-Hypnotic Suggestions:
The therapist may provide post-hypnotic suggestions, which are positive suggestions designed to reinforce the changes made during the session and support your ongoing condition management efforts. These suggestions are embedded in your subconscious mind to help you manage your condition effectively in everyday situations.
  5. Integration and Follow-up:
After the session, you'll gradually return to your normal waking state. The therapist will guide you through this process and discuss any insights or experiences you had during the session.
Follow-up sessions are crucial to reinforce the changes made and address any challenges that may arise. The therapist will monitor your progress and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.

Important Considerations for Anger Management Hypnotherapy:

  • Find a qualified and experienced hypnotherapist who specializes in anger management. Check their credentials and experience.
  • Hypnotherapy is not a quick fix. It requires commitment and active participation from the client to achieve lasting results.
  • While hypnotherapy can be very effective, it’s not a replacement for professional help if you’re experiencing severe anger issues or have other mental health conditions. It may be used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches.
  • Be patient and persistent. Results may not be immediate, but with consistent effort and support from your therapist, you can make significant progress in managing your anger with Anger Management Hypnotherapy.

Examples of Anger Management Hypnotherapy

Solving Anger with Anger Management Hypnotherapy

The problem with convincing a client that their anger is self-destructive is that when the person thinks non-self helpingly, they feel bad (angry) they then convince themselves of utter nonsense i.e., when they think bad, they feel bad.

Contrary to what the public might think, I have found that my clients who present anger issues are quite nice people.  In fact, most people I treat are very nice.  I have a saying that the people who come to see me don’t really need to see me.  It is the people who do not come to see me are the ones I want to see.  They cause the problem!

People become frustrated when they try too hard to please others and then become angry that the great lengths they are going to is not being appreciated.  The punitive conscience appears.

Example 1-  Anger Management Hypnotherapy: A GP.

A friend of mine is a very experienced GP. He cares a lot about people and dislikes injustice. His wife phoned me one day and asked if could come to the house to calm him down. When I arrived, he was blazing mad.  What is wrong I asked?

He replied that he had just been in hospital as a patient, so I deduced was nervous, the nurse who was taking the blood from him knew who he was and was also nervous.  She had missed the vein in the hand, and it was now all bruised.

“She should not have done that” he yelled.

I said to him that he was overlooking the fact that she had and that he was now recycling something that had happened two hours ago by saying it should not have happened, thereby keeping the past in the present and creating a debilitating future for himself.

“Oh, my goodness, I am trying too hard to control the uncontrollable” he exclaimed!

What did you want from this situation I asked?

“Since it was a blood pressure related procedure, it might have been a better idea to show her how to take blood” he sheepishly replied.

Since there is 8 billion fallible mistake making human beings on planet earth, bad things are likely to happen.  We needlessly move bad into awful by saying they shouldn’t!

In Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, our slogan is: I will not on myself or others today!

A very good exercise to reduce the excessive emotion and irrational thinking is Rational Emotive Imagery:

Start with something low on SUDS (Subjective Unit of Discomfort Scale, 0-10) and work up. Practice 3 times a day, morning noon and night. Practise for a few minutes.

Visualise self in problematic situation, then memory should bring back feeling, it may be a physical feeling, stay with the feeling for 1 minute and observe, do not analyse the feelings, or distract self, then silently in your own self-talk tell yourself “I don’t like this feeling, but I can deal with it”. Then notice how a new outcome spontaneously.

Repeat 3 times until the feelings become less.

You will find that when you go into real life situations, more effective way of thinking and feeling emerges.

Preferring that someone had not done what they have done and then trying to show them a better way is more effective than saying they should not have done that and what awful people they are.

Example 2 –  Anger Management Hypnotherapy: Myself.

A few years ago, I fell into the same trap as my GP friend.

My old dog was ill and took him to see a vet.  The vet gave the dog a cursory examination and said that the dog had a tumour on his liver and should be put down and the vet wanted to see him in a weeks’ time.

A week later she said that the dog seemed a bit better and had a stay of execution!

I immediately lost faith with the vet and took the dog to see my friend the GP who said that he was not a vet but as far as he could tell the dog did not have a tumour on his liver.

2 other vets then corroborated this.

I wrote a letter of complaint to the first vet, but before I sent it, I showed it to my friend the GP.  He said, “you are trying to do what I did a while ago”.

He asked, “what do you want from this”?

I replied I do not want the vet to do this to someone else’s animal.

“Ok, the vet is young and newly qualified but let’s not ruin her career by threatening to report them to the owners of the practise.

Why don’t you factually point out where the vet has gone wrong, then close the letter by saying, in the hope that you learn from this I won’t take this matter further.  The vet is more likely to learn! I shoulded on the nurse you are about should on the vet”!

Try not to put yourself in an emotional wheelchair.  Life is difficult enough.
